THORENS BEST BUY`s – THAT IS THE QUESTION…Choosing which Thorens model to buy can be a bit of a Challenge, especially to the less Experienced Turntable buyer. Many different models, some in model variants all looking alike unless actually being it. Old School models from early 70`s over innovative models from late 80`s over many somewhat Indifferent models from 10`s ending up with brand new models recently designed. Confusing to many buyers, so here a small overall Guide stating the most Important facts and issues on the most popular Thorens Turntables in an effort to suggest which model brings You the absolutely best Sound. Sound is subjective, hence we will also take into Consideration build quality, Price and Reliability of various models. Many different Thorens variants were designed between 2001 – 2016, most of these without the very Essence of a Thorens Turntable; the 3-point Suspension. None of these models ever became a Hit, so we have chosen not to waste much time on those but only mention them as being a number of “Flatfish”- versions in Rega-style balancing on three Rubber Feet plus a handfull of Semi-/ Fully Automatic models ending in a 3-point Suspended 900-Series so costly that it never became a Hit either, quite the opposite actually. For many people the Thorens brand is identical to the TD160, naturally plus it`s many Sisters. The more mature Turntable Enthusiast will also think of the Semi-Professional TD126 and the TD125 versions. However, the Interest for these rather Electronically-stuffed Disco versions have dropped Considerably the latest Decade or so. They have been caught by Time, spare parts are almost Impossible to get hold of and manufactured in the early 70`s they all need serious spare part-attention if the are to be kept running. Not only Soundwise but also Economically these models are not Best Buy`s. The TD160 takes a lot of space in the Thorens picture, partly because of it`s many Sisters, TD165, 166, 147 etc. Manufactured over 3 Decades many TD160 versions are constantly put up for sale on the Second Hans market, not all of those are Best Buy`s, actually there is only one TD160 model which may be Considered a TD160 Best Buy; TD 160 Super Mk.V from 1991/1992. Why only this, many will ask. Simple, it was manufactured 20 years later than most of the TD160`s for sale all around, and age is an important Factor when buying a Second Hand and typically Old School Turntable. A calculation (on the Turntable Platter only) looks like this: + 36.000.000. More than 36 Mill. turns if a TD160 has played One Record each Day in 50 years. And this is only the Turntable Platter, we did not even Calculate how many turns the Motor has made simultaneously. This figure will look app. like this: 9.099.090.000, so no wonder most TD160 models suffer from Motor problems. These Motors are rather Expensive to Repair, some Shops charge op to € 3-400,- for a Repair of a 50 year old Motor, often more than the value of an entire Tunrtable. This is somewhat hopeless as a brand new and better Motor can be bought for app. half this Price, even with Control Board included. So will a standard TD160 be a Thorens Best Buy ? No, it will not. Unless the Mk.V models from 1992/1992, 95% of the 160`s have been in use for 5 Decades, so besides the Motor issue they also suffer from worn out Springs, a sad Chipboard Plinth covered in thin Veneer or Wood look-a-like Plastic Foil, a mechanical Speed shift that should never have been Invented and no possibility for adjusting Speed as many 160`s were designed without Control Board. HOWEVER: If You can find a TD160 Super Mk.V You have a serious Competitor to many more Expensive Turntables, even new models. But finding a MINT Second Hand TD160 Super Mk.V is difficult. Not many around, fewer in MINT.
Budgets are different, Sound is subjective, but a comparison between a TD160 Super Mk.V with TP90 Tonearm and it`s predecessor TD1601 reweals the two Turntables to be quite even. It is then up tp You which model You prefer, in short a TD1601 has a slightly enhanced Bass whilst the TD160 Super Mk.V is more focused on Precision and Detail. As we focus on Second Hand models a TD147 in fine condition would do nicely as a Replacement for a TD160 Super Mk.V. Should You wish something more, I.E. a better Tonearm, more Luxury, an new Suspension etc., another option would be one of Our own 160 GRIFFON Turntables, Handmade using only Premium Quality materials. You state Budget, You design – We advice, We build. it
Springs on a 3-point Suspension are excessively Important parts. Traditional Conical Springs have weaknesses, many owners of the low budget TD165/166 models born with 1,3mm. Conical Springs will know this. Suspension is wobbly and it tends to tilt in a line from below Headshell towards the backside between Tonearm and Platter. This Problem exists more or less on all TD160 versions, TD147, TD166 etc. Trying to Improve this wobblyness an Innovative predecessor to the TD160 was named TD320. Apart from sharing the Thorens name, these two Turntables are as far apart as black and white. The TD320 is designed with Leaf Steel Springs, and even today this model is way ahead of both the TD160 and most other suspensioned Turntables. The successor TD320 Mk.II with TP90 Tonearm even took it further, today this is still one of the very best Plug `n` Play Turntables ever designed. Soundwise Precision and Details are Keywords when judging a TD320 Mk.II, accompanied by Reliability thanks to German Craftsmanship this model has for long been and will continue to be the absolute Winner within Thorens Best Buy`s. Also it`s Sister TD321 is a Best Buy should You choose a Turntable designed for replacing Tonearms. Apart from this Feature the two models are Identical. Their younger Sister TD2001 is also designed on Leaf Steel Springs, but only one layer Springs which results in a very soft and more Old School sounding Turntable. Sound is very Subjective, but based on facts like Mechanical design, level of Quality and commom Thoroughness, the TD320 Mk.II will always be the Winner within the very best Thorens Turntables built over the latest Decades. Considering the Price level for a MINT TD320 Mk.II compared to a TD160 Super Mk.V and the new TD1601, it will not be beaten. TD320 Mk.II is the Obvious choice if You are looking for a fair Priced Thorens Turntable which really Contains the Essence of the famous Thorens DNA. We focus on Second hand models, Our Expereince within these models dates back to 1981. Sound is subjective. Budgets are Important to most Buyers. Our overall Best Buy suggestion cannot be other than a Thorens TD320 Mk.II.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS – HUNDREDS OF TURNTABLES RESTORED…

Unfortunately, we no longer exchange these models: TD145 / 146/147 + TD165 / 166: The starting point for upgrading is too bad, almost everything needs to be replaced. Inner plates in fiberglass, 7mm. bearings, old-fashioned tone arms, worn motors etc. Many are 40-45 years old, the result is too expensive and too poor in terms of costs. Service incl. minor repairs: 390, – TD125 / 126: Approx. 50 years old. The age alone tells a lot about these two models. A colossus of clay feet: An overly heavy work on excessively soft springs placed in an excessively flimsy box of thin, glued chipboard. Old tone arms, steering print / engine problems, hard-to-reach spare parts etc. makes us prefer to avoid the models. TD316 / 318 Mk.II: The models usually have very old-fashioned / cheap tone arms, inner plates in fiber plastic, 7mm. bearings Here too, it will be too expensive to rebuild in relation to the result you get. TD2001 / 3001/325/350 we are upgrading. It is much needed, everyone is everything, too soft in the springs. They sail, are very uneasy, etc. Rightly invisible changes, these flaws are remedied at very affordable prices. Please inquire for more details. Only the best models: Thorens TD160 S – TD320 – TD321 – Linn Sondek – Ariston RD11 – Roksan Xerxes. Cheaply constructed “Flatfish” such as Rega, Pro-Ject, Music Hall and the like: Unfortunately no interest. The best sound is always hidden in a floating suspension, therefore…
Desværre indbytter vi ikke længere disse modeller:
TD145 / 146 / 147 + TD165 / 166: Udgangspunktet for opgradering er for dårligt, næsten alt skal skiftes ud. Indertallerkener i Fiberplast, 7mm. lejer, gammeldags tonearme, slidte motorer m.v. Mange er 40-45 år gamle, resultatet bliver for dyrt og for dårlig ift. omkostningerne.
Service incl. mindre reparationer: 390,-
